Jack Black is teaming up with School of Rock director Richard Linklater for a dark comedy titled Bernie. The film is set in a small Texas town. Here, the local hero is a community leader- mortician named Bernie, played by Black. He stumbles upon an unlikely friendship with a wealthy- and very particular- widow, played by Shirley MacLaine. He accidentally kills her, then tries to keep up appearances and convince everyone she’s still alive. It could just be the title, but it sounds a just a little Weekend at Bernie’s. But rest assured, this film will be much darker. What makes this comedy so dark is that it’s based on a true story. In 1999, a Texas mortician – who went by the name of Bernie- was convicted of killing an 81-year-old widow back in 1996, and then hiding her body in a freezer for nine months. The two reportedly met in 1990 at the funeral of the woman’s husband. They became friends, and by 1991, she had changed her will to leave Bernie her fortune of about ten million dollars.
