Ice cream is the perfect cool-down treat on a hot summer day. From black raspberry to classic chocolate, there are many flavors to choose from for the perfect cup or cone. We asked readers where to go in Boston and beyond for the best scoops, and nearly 2,000 people responded.

Homemade ice cream chain JB Lakes, which has 17 stores in the Greater Boston area, came in first, with 22% of the vote. She told us about Crescent Ridge Dairy, where ice cream is made according to a 50-year-old recipe, and The Scoop N Scooter, open until the wee hours of the morning.

What do you not like about FoMu? FoMu is called an “earth-inspired dessert.” FoMu ice cream is made with plant-based ingredients, so even lactose intolerant customers can enjoy it. The store got 5% of the vote. Readers recommended Banoffee Pie, which uses fresh bananas, and Dark & ​​Stormy, where juicy ginger gives flavor. One reader recommended “anything with hot vegan fudge,” while Dan J, of Roxbury Crossing said, “I never thought I’d say nut milk ice cream would taste smoother, creamier, and more delicious than any ice cream made from Dairy – but FOMU is incredible – is highly recommended for any flavors based on coconut milk.”

Emack & Bolio’s started in 1975, when pop rock, music advocate, wanted to create a place where musicians could catch up on partying and enjoy something cold and delicious. Since then, rock ‘n’ roll fans have flocked to Emack & Bolio’s to sample what the stores call their “unique and infamous flavor combinations.” Today, the chain makes original flavors like grasshopper pie, maple nut, and “deep purple” slice. The place is interesting to the audience, with 7% of the vote. “Banana grazing ice cream, on a chocolate-dipped cone with sprinkles… yum!” said reader Erin of Salem, New Hampshire.

3. Ron Gourmet Ice Cream and Bowling

Handmade ice cream is on the menu at Ron’s Gourmet Ice Cream & Bowling. Some of the shop’s signature flavors include almond mocha, Oreo cake mix, and Dutch chocolate. You can stop just to pick up a cone, or you can plan a party and rent an old bowling alley. Ron received 7% of the vote. According to Mary Ellen J. From Brighton: “Hyde Park and Dedham have the tastiest and creamiest flavours ever. I usually get the caramel brownie or the raspberry-lemon rickey. The staff is very friendly, the atmosphere is friendly and warm. A classic for decades.”

2. Scoop N Scooter

No wonder The Scoop N Scootery gets 8% of the vote: they deliver an ice cream sundae to your door until 2am. The store started as an ice cream truck, before getting its first brick-and-mortar storefront in Arlington. These days, options include sundaes like The Garland, using s’mores ice cream, and Filling Berry Fluffy, with bananas, strawberries, Nutella, and more. Anais L. of Arlington said, “Turtle ice cream, hot fudge, graham crackers, whipped cream. So delicious! Open until very late!” Meanwhile, other readers praised the “innovative sundae,” adding that Scoop N Scootery Offers “many varieties”.

Founded in Jamaica Plain in 1981, JB Leaks has built something of an empire in Massachusetts, with 17 stores in the Greater Boston area. The chain received 22% of the vote, and was a favorite among Boston.com readers, who praised flavors such as coffee brownie cream, walnut maple butter, almond coconut chips, and mint slices. For a special treat, you can try a raspberry and mango sundae or a peanut butter sundae. Readers note that the staff in the stores are friendly and personable, as Angel of Malden puts it: “I order the chocolate brownie sundae with brownie ice cream, with chocolate chips instead of walnuts. I love this place, because the Charles Street location staff are always welcoming and fun to interact with” .
