An Italian-inspired restaurant by Top Chef is coming to Water Street Tampa

Tampa, Florida – A new restaurant concept from Proper House Group and Chef Ferrell Alvarez is coming to Water Street Tampa. Ash will serve Italian-inspired cuisine and feature a spacious outdoor patio.

The team is also behind the acclaimed restaurant Rooster & the Till in Seminole Heights, recently awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Ash is set to open in the spring of 2023 on the ground floor of Asher, the area’s newest residential development, joining Wagamama and Synovus, according to Water Street Tampa developers, Strategic Property Partners LLC.

“Proper House Group and Chef Ferrell Alvarez are industry veterans with a proven track record,” said Lee Schaffler, Portfolio Manager at SPP. “Their concepts at Sparkman Wharf and in Seminole Heights are incredibly successful, so we look forward to watching them captivate the Water Street Tampa community as the area establishes itself as the city’s dining destination.”

Including 2,400 square feet of indoor dining space with an additional 1,000 square feet of outdoor dining space, Ash will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and will serve brunch in the future. The menu will offer focused and enjoyable cuisine with Italian undertones.

Owned by Chef Ferrel Alvarez, 2017 James Beard Foundation semi-finalist; business partner and owner of T Rodriguez Restaurant; and entrepreneur Chon Nguyen, Proper House Group is a Tampa-based hospitality group best known for its acclaimed restaurants in the Tampa Bay area.

The group also partnered with its COO, Miles Gallagher, on this restaurant.

The new full-service restaurant marks the Proper House Group and Alvarez’s third endeavor in the mixed-use district, joining Gallito Taqueria and Dang Dude, which opened at Sparkman Wharf earlier this year.

In addition to Rooster & the Till, Proper House Group restaurants include the Nebraska Mini Mart in Seminole Heights, and Gallito Taqueria at The Joinery.

“As SPP partners with two existing concepts at Sparkman Wharf, the ability to bring Ash to fruition in Water Street Tampa is very humbling to us,” Alvarez said. “We look forward to sharing the company with other restaurants in the area and can’t wait to be a part of something special in our city. Our guests can expect to experience the same creative passion that has made Rooster & the Till such a special place in Seminole Heights.”

The name of the restaurant refers to the ash tree, a symbol of creative expression, productivity, strength and longevity, the same name as the SPP apartment building where the restaurant is located.

Proper House Group collaborates with Houston, Texas interior design studio, Gin Design Group, and Tampa graphic design studio, Pep Rally Inc. , on restaurant design and branding.

Led by founder Jane Braverman, Jane Design Group created an interior with arched lighting elements, an emphasis on the open kitchen and a dining room crowned with a carved ash tree.

According to Pep Rally Inc. The logo design evokes nature with gentle sweeping lines that mimic the branches of ascending trees, as well as the arch, which is an ancient symbol of new beginnings. The warm earth tones in the logo refer to the terrazzo and the soft backlit bays found in the interior.

Ash will complement Water Street Tampa’s growing retail scene, which will also be home to the Bredalina, Bolon Brasserie, Wagamama, The Pearl, Small Giant Restaurant & Bar, On Water Wine and Mini Luxe, along with the currently open GreenWise Market, Chill Bros. Scoop Shop and Naked Farms.

Water Street Tampa spans 56 acres and connects Tampa’s central business district to its waterfront, housing retail, dining, parks, homes, and offices. To date, SPP has signed leases with more than 30 retailers throughout Water Street Tampa.
