Mustang Donuts have been open for nearly 30 years, so you know they’re doing something right. Sitting on the edge of the SMU campus, this place has a constant flow of students who come every morning for a hot donut. These cakes are not fancy, but they are inexpensive and always hit the spot. As a local, if you’re going to a picnic party in a park in Dallas, someone will probably bring dozens of Mustangs. 6. Hypnotic Donuts
Adjacent to the Dallas Arboretum, you can find a delicious and innovative variety of flavors at Hypnotic Donuts. They also serve chicken biscuits and recently added corn dogs to their convenience store – but are back in the cakes. The blueberry pie is one of our favorites, and it’s large, hand-rolled, and hand-cut, with fresh blueberries in the dough and covered in the prettiest purple glaze. “Espresso Yo’self” is another favorite cake, the chocolate cake with espresso coating and caramel drizzle. Even coffee lovers will enjoy this small but strong cake. Want something a little different? Their “Top O’ the Morning” is a yeasty, dark chocolate-filled donut topped with smooth whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings. The filling is thick, rich and unforgettable. Come early to avoid the lines and to make sure you get the flavor of your choice before they sell out.

In the heart of Uptown, Urban Donut offers fun flavors that will take you back to your childhood. To add to the fun, many of their staples are named after Dallas neighborhoods and famous streets/roads. Choose from some of their most popular cakes: “Cerealously” (fruit pebbles), “Urban Circus” (inspired by frozen animal crackers), “Highland Park” (a Girl Scouts Samoa Donut), or “McKinney Avenue” (Cookies and cream). Also of note is the maple glazed donut. If you are the creative type, you can design your own cakes here. Unique and truly urban, as soon as you enter you will notice exposed brick walls and chalk boards with instructions on how to build your own donut. The earlier I come the cakes are fresher – but they are also open until later in the afternoon which is what sets this shop apart. 3. Max Donut Shop
Max’s has been around since 1981 and this shop knows how to make great donuts. You won’t find crazy great flavors here, but these simple flavor donuts are among the best in the greater Dallas area. These cupcakes have a very homemade feel, not too picky when it comes to appearance, but perfect when it comes to flavour. The original glazed donut is the best of all the donut shops: big with a perfect coating and great texture (not too light and not too thick), always fresh and under 60 cents. Their maple ribbon is perfect, made up to three times the size of a regular ribbon, with a generous layer of sweet maple varnish on top. Chocolate glazed cupcakes serve the best chocolate glazed cupcakes in the Dallas area. Other noteworthy flavors include the old-fashioned brownie donut, raspberry cake, and apple fritter. The locals really love this place which explains why it has been around for so long. Max is worth the trip up Allen. Be warned – they are usually sold out full of original glass by 11am.

Brioche dough is soaked in homemade horchata for 24 hours, its bottom is drizzled with fine French chocolate, and finally topped with sweet cinnamon merengue.
