Cambridge Udon Yume Ga Arukara expands to Boston

Cambridge udon store Yume Ga Arukara, which opened five years ago, is expanding across the river into the Boston Harbor area this winter, opening in the work area known as the Superette, which will eventually be a “large European-inspired plaza” filled with dining options and other retail stores. The restaurant’s Cambridge website will remain operational.

The new location will continue to focus on Udon, per a representative of WS Development, the real estate developer behind 33 acres of retail, office and more in the seaport area. But there will be additional Japanese dishes on the menu as well, as well as more additions to the udon itself. (Aside from occasional specials, the original site offers a very simple menu of four versions of udon—hot or cold, hot or not. Other garnishes, depending on which versions the diner chooses.)

Diners will find seasonal specials at the new location, highlighting ingredients sourced from local farms and businesses. Also new on the menu: a selection of small plates, plus beer, wine and sake.

While the list will be larger, the new site will make its own noodles using the same model of noodle machine imported from Japan as its brother in Cambridge.

Yume Ga Arukara was co-founded by Tsuyoshi Nishioka, who also founded popular Cambridge ramen shop Yume Wu Katari, Juan Carlos Vidal of Japanese curry restaurant Cafe Mami and izakaya Ittoku. Nishioka sold his stake in Yume Ga Arukara to Vidal in 2020, so the two restaurants are no longer related, regardless of their joint history.

Once it opened, Yume Ga Arukara gained a lot of attention both locally and nationally. The bustling noodle shop, housed within a mostly Japanese food court within the Leslie University property in Porter Square, regularly draws long lines of customers eager to sit at one of the small restaurant’s wooden counters and savor their udon while gazing into the open kitchen.

Yume Ga Arukara’s expansion into the Seaport District is one of the few news stories for the neighborhood in recent weeks. Ombrello, a seasonal pop-up patio in the Superette District, made its debut, showcasing charcuterie and other Kured snacks. Kokoda by Love Art, a fast-casual casual restaurant serving poke, Fijian seafood dish kokoda, and more, opened recently. And it’s coming early next year: Texas-based dinner and movie chain Alamo Drafthouse and Connecticut-based Boqueria tapas chain.
