‘Celebrity Chef Nikki’ wows BGC staff, will cook for Gladys Knight

When Gladys Knight comes to town, you’d better give her some soul food.

Chef Nikki Alexander plans to do just that, after he stunned the Boys and Girls Club staff with some amazing fare on Monday.

The Boys and Girls Club of Dane County (BGCDC) is hosting an evening with Gladys Knight on Saturday, July 16, at the Overture Center, followed by its annual All White Party with musical guest Dru Hill. Madison365 is proud to be the media partner of this event. Tickets are still available.

Alexander, who goes by the alias of celebrity chef Nikki, was visiting Madison, where she once lived and where many of her adult children still live, last week. She was bringing her grandchildren back from a visit to her home in Springfield, Illinois, where she owns and operates Nickey’s Southern Style Kitchen.

While here, she got a notification that she was tagged in a social media – The Boys and Girls Club of Dane County was looking for a chef to cater to the celebrities who would be entertained at this weekend’s main fundraiser, including Gladys Knight, Drew Hill , after 7 and more.

In an interview with Madison365, Alexander said she knew she had to. I found the address of the BGCDC office on Google and stopped by, spoke with Chief Operating Officer Laura Ford Harris and arranged a tasting for Monday.

“You said if you depend on tasting, you might have to get your pen ready because it’s gone after the tasting,” Alexander said.

She was right – Michael Johnson, CEO of BGCDC Posted on Facebook That nine employees who tasted her food have gone awry.

“He tried it. He said, ‘Man, you’re right. That’s amazing. I’ve never had red beans and rice before.'”Alexander remembers.

Gladys and other musicians, as well as other local dignitaries, will enjoy baked chicken legs, greens, smoked turkey, homemade macaroni and cheese, French fries, grilled salmon, fried catfish, barbecue ribs, red beans, rice, and creamy prawns grits, Peach cobbler and “the infamous cornbread.”

If that all sounds good, you might be able to give it a try sometime soon — Alexander will be moving her restaurant to Los Angeles to be closer to her eldest son, actor Roma Flynn, on “How to Get Away With Murder,” but is also looking to open a Wisconsin location soon.

Alexander has built a reputation as a celebrity chef over a long culinary career.

“I think if you count my kids, I’ve been a chef for over 30 years,” she said. “But cooking for other people, more than 20 years.” These “others” include Viola Davis, Nicole Wallace, Trina the Rock Star, Kevin Campbell, and many more.

It’s not about the red carpet, though — Alexander said she’s also fed the homeless in Springfield and elsewhere, and is happy to cook for anyone who appreciates good Southern-style cooking.

“Whoever wants to try my wonderful food is OK,” she said.

Tickets for the Gladys Knight Concert featuring After 7, the All White Concert featuring Dru Hill and many more celebrity guests are still available.
