Chronicle of events: Social Ice Cream – Dare Delight

>> I have a chocolate waffle cone with Oreos on it! Kelly: The SWISSVALE DARI DELITE comes highly recommended by these kids. >> 1000 out of 10! Kelly: What they may not know is that he was born from a different generation. First opened in 1955, this ice cream shop has quickly become a community focal point. >> I used to go to SWISSVALE HIGH. We live on the street here. We get off the bus, we come here with our friends and family at school. Kelly: Dare Swissville Delight has traditionally served bright, soft service, and smiles for decades. But that has all changed in the past few years. >> When I moved here about five years ago, this place was completely closed. It looked like no one had been in it for about 20 years. Kelly: The owner started keeping it closed most of the time. That, up to one lucky afternoon outing. >> I live in the neighborhood, and I will continue here, just like everyone else, and I really wish this was open. So, I just sent a message to the owner and asked if she would sell it, and here we are ready to sell it, and here we go. KELLY: BURKET CHELSEA was like a lot in that it completely reimagined her life during the pandemic. She quit her office job and was looking for something a little fuller. >> Literally, ever since I was a kid, I’ve had that kind of vision to run some kinds of food-based spaces and communities. Kelly: With no prior work experience, she put on heels and started working. After a year and a half of renovations, which included this shiny new building painted by artists in the vicinity, the new and improved SWISSVALE DARI DELITE opened its window on Memorial Day, 2021. >> Got your visit. So you can come back for your wife’s tropical storm. [LAUGHTER] Kelly: Now, you can’t walk into a Swissville store on a nice summer’s night without seeing the hustle and bustle return. >> I am really happy to see her thriving. There is always a group of people here. Nice. >> After a long day at work, you want a banana milkshake or a strawberry shortbread. Nice to be able to close. You don’t have to go to Monroeville, you know. It is in our area. Kelly: There is no doubt that the community has occupied Dare Delet and its new property. >> They are the best! Kelly: Like with Chelsea, and whether or not you feel, was that the right move? >> It’s the first time I’ve felt my skin, and I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to. Kelly: You could say, she’s a decent living
