When it comes to what makes a restaurant “fun”, everyone has a different opinion. After an exhaustive search of all restaurants in Idaho, one publication identified one particular restaurant as the “most fun restaurant.”
What do you think makes a restaurant interesting? Dozens of TVs playing the biggest matches in football? A very competitive trivial night? Live music? Challenging eating that breaks the gut? A blazing meal? (We’re looking at you, Barbacoa.)
There are plenty of restaurants like this in downtown Boise and surrounding communities that offer such fun, but none of them have earned Idaho’s #1 spot on Eat This, Not That’s “These Are the Most Fun Restaurants In Your State” list. According to their list, the Gem State’s most enjoyable restaurant can be found in seven hours from Boise on the Coeur d’Alene.
Taphouse Unchained is Idaho’s most fun restaurant
Pick Eat This, Not That Taphouse Unchained, a “bike bar” located a two-minute walk from the popular Coeur d’Alene resort. When we say “bike bar,” we don’t mean one of those pesky pedaling fads that regularly slows traffic in downtown Boise. We mean a bar fully decked out with bike-inspired décor.
The decor makes sense for its location on Sherman Street. It’s a short ride to the North Idaho Centennial Trail that runs 23 miles from the Idaho/Washington state line to Higgins Point, just east of the city.
The resort is owned and operated by the restaurant and opened in 2015. A year later, they were named the Best Bar in North Idaho by Spokane’s interior. From visiting their Facebook page to watching the trick-taking videos of Monday night football at Taphouse Unchained, you can tell they really take pride in their fun and games!
With the resort out there, we’re not surprised that the menu looks downright killer. From typical pub food like burgers and pizza, to more creative dishes like Chef Tim’s Huckleberry Ribs and Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese, there’s plenty to help you refuel after a bike ride or a day at the beach.
If you like handcrafted beer, Taphouse Unchained is well worth a stop while browsing their bottle room. The coolers are filled with over 250 beer labels. Once you’ve narrowed down your favorites, you can create six packs to go.
The decor is wonderful. The food is good. The beer selection is unparalleled, but the real reason Taphouse Unchained has been called the “most enjoyable” restaurant in Idaho is the famous “Margarita Bike.” When you order a Bike-A-Rita, the staff invites you to hop on the mixer stationary bike and pedal until the 25-ounce Mi Campo Margarita double shot is blended to your liking!
Let’s be honest, tequila tastes even better when you know how hard you work for it! During the summer months, you can take the fruits of your labor to the patio along Sherman Street and cool off while people-watching.
Does Boise have more fun options?
Sure, Taphouse Unchained sounds like a bucket list worthy, but with gas prices soaring, you might not be willing to take the seven-hour trip to check it out. We understand and quite frankly, we think there is a strong contender for “Idaho’s Most Fun Restaurant” here in Boise.
While the food can be a little pricey, Western Proper on Idaho Street is a lot of fun! Their parlor offers three lanes of skeeball, four-person air hockey, Pacman, Atari pong, boxing, and a photo booth. But the real reason we think Boise’s Western Proper should be in the conversation for “more fun” is its four bowling alleys!
