Gourmet Market Neighborhood | Food, recipes and entertainment

McCall’s Meat and Fish Co. is now open on the West Side

McCall’s Meat and Fish Co. opened. A major neighborhood in Los Feliz for more than a decade, it has acquired a new location on Santa Monica’s famous Avenue Montana.

Founded in 2010 by dedicated chefs Nathan McCall and Karen Yu, this one-stop shop for gourmet groceries, meats and fish, focuses on providing fine dining and quality restaurant products to local customers.

In January 2022, new owners David and Michael Teller opened the Santa Monica location to expand McCall’s reach and service to an area with few options for quality meat and fish. In Los Feliz, McCall has thrived thanks to strong relationships with locals and chefs.

“I’ve seen kids go from middle school to college,” said Olin Schneider, vice president of operations. “We wanted the feel of the neighborhood. We’ll keep coming back to that when we walk through Montana.”

The new location brings East Side sellers to Westside, while highlighting other local small businesses.

Eastside products such as Kruegermann Pickles, Zab’s Hot Sauce and Jam are available from Sqirl’s at the new McCall Restaurant. The location is the only Westside retail place to sell Jyan Isaac Bread apart from Isaac’s own bakery on Ocean Park Boulevard. Isaac, who started selling bread during quarantine to friends and family, has a reputation all over Los Angeles, and Schneider is passionate about serving what he believes is “the best bread in town.”

Central to McCall’s experience is the opportunity to leave the store to see how the products they sell are prepared.

It’s the conversations, too,” Schneider said. “Customers will leave confident they can go home and enjoy a great experience with someone while they’re eating their meal.”

McCall’s offers a one-stop shop for all ingredients of a successful meal.

“If you come looking to make sushi and all we can offer you is fish, this is not the boutique experience you would expect from a shop like us,” Schneider said. “The best rice we can get from Japan and the best soy sauce we can get from the market in Japan.”

Schneider hopes customers can skip the Los Angeles traffic by reducing their shopping to one location.

This attention to detail is also on the fish and meat that McCall sells.

“Sourcing is always put by flavor and quality first,” Schneider said, although sustainability, humane products, and the absence of hormones and GMOs are also important parts of the equation.

Free parking in the back makes it easy to navigate often busy Montana Street and get home quickly with all the ingredients for a delicious meal. Take it from Schneider: “It’s all about the extra details. There’s nothing like what we’re doing in the zone.”
