Every day is a “national day” for something, but July 17th is a day worth celebrating: National Ice Cream Day! While we think sweet and savory ice cream should be celebrated 365 days a year, it’s good to know that there’s a special day dedicated to this treat at the end of summer. Whether you enjoy making ice cream at home or rather go out for a sundae, everyone has their favorite flavor.
Now, just in time for this casual holiday, we’ve got some thoughts on America’s most popular ice cream flavors. And some of the results may leave you with a touch of brain freeze!
Before we get into the most popular ice cream flavors, let’s get into some cold and hard numbers about the immense popularity of this dessert across the country. According to an analysis by TopData, Americans were screaming for ice cream more in 2022 than they did in 2021.
TopData reported in its latest national ice cream survey that ice cream sales across the country jumped 29% compared to the same time last year. According to the International Dairy Food Federation, in 2021, US ice cream makers produced more than 1.3 billion gallons of ice cream.
We’ll need a lot of spoons for that.
For the country’s most popular ice cream flavors, survey respondents from across the country shared their preferences and TopData collected the results. The top three flavors, based on how many states ranked them at the top, are:
chocolate: In this poll, at least, chocolate ice cream came out as the best flavor. It is the number one choice in 15 huge states: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia.
rocky road: Rocky Road came in second, ranking highest in 12 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, and Washington.
Third place is a tie between Naples and Strawberry:
Naples: Well, that might be a bit cheating, but with seven states rating it as their favorite ice cream flavor, the three-flavored Neapolitan (chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry) took third place in the poll: Kansas, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming .
the strawberry: Seven states also gave this refreshing flavor top marks: Arkansas, Kentucky, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Tennessee, South Carolina and Vermont.
Some of the unique flavors with the highest scores in this poll include cherry (Massachusetts), cookie dough (Florida and Maryland), coffee (New Hampshire and New York), coconut (Georgia and Montana), and biscuit and cream (Colorado, Texas).
You might be surprised to learn that vanilla didn’t top the list for any country.
