Asia Times Square in Grand Prairie has long been the main Asian shopping and dining destination for Tarrant County residents. But it’s now “slightly old school,” says Tony Nguyen of D-FW-based Kemeno Group, which operates several Halal Guys and 7 Leaves Cafe franchises and markets for Asia Times Square.
The cuisine and performances at the Grand Prairie complex mostly attract older, mainly American-Vietnamese residents, but Nguyen and his group want to change that.
“We want to introduce Generation Z and diversity. In other Asian enclaves [around D-FW]It’s very mixed and more diverse, with more Korean, Laotian and Cambodian foods.”
Kemeno Group, launched in 2016 by Nguyen and co-founder and friend Danny Bui, both first-generation Vietnamese Americans, 7 Leaves Cafe opened in front of Asia Times Square in Grand Prairie in late May 2022. It’s their ninth franchise opening in D-FW The first coffee and tea site.
“Transports by car are the dream of any operator these days,” says Nguyen. “These things are rare. Like finding a needle in a haystack.”
Nguyen, a Fort Worth native who grew up helping out with his father’s Vietnamese grocery store, hopes that adding 7 Leaves will appeal across generations and attract a more diverse audience to the area. There are 17 hot and cold coffees and teas such as Vietnamese coffee, Japanese matcha soy tea, and Thai green tea, and other beverages featuring ingredients such as pandan leaves, mung bean, taro, and their signature ‘whipped sea cream’.
Since the opening of 7 Leaves in Asia Times Square, Nguyen has seen many elderly and multi-generational Vietnamese-American customers use the car. Additionally, most of the staff at 7 Leaves in Grand Prairie are bilingual and can communicate in Vietnamese for older clients.
7 Leaves, launched in California in 2012, often uses Gandhi’s famous quote – “Be the change you wish to see in the world” – on its mugs and other marketing materials. Nguyen says he loves the company, the brand and the product, and says it’s ultimately about connecting cultures and “treating people right”.
The Kemeno Group has also donated 100% of its net sales from the opening day of 7 Leaves Grand Prairie to two organizations: Grand Prairie United Charities and Sunflower of Peace, a non-profit organization committed to helping Ukrainians affected by the Russian military invasion.
Kemeno Group plans to open more Cafe Leaves 7 locations in the D-FW District.
