Although whole-wheat pasta is “marketed as a healthy alternative to traditional pasta made with refined flour” and may technically be healthier than the alternative, Richards says, “it shouldn’t be considered healthy.”

Here’s the thing: A processed food is processed food, whether it’s made with whole wheat or not — and no highly processed product is actually healthy. “Whole-wheat pasta is still a processed food product, not a whole food,” Richards explains. “While we consume many food products in our daily lives, substituting one food product for another is not the best option.” Instead, she says choosing whole-food alternatives to the processed foods you’re trying to cut back on is the best way to go.

Richards offers another warning, too: Whole-wheat pasta can cause infections. She notes, “Wheat is an irritant for many people with or without a wheat allergy or gluten intolerance/intolerance.” This means that even though whole wheat pasta is slightly healthier than the regular version, it can still lead to health problems, and ultimately weight gain. Prioritize whole foods

With so many mislabeled “healthy” foods out there, how do you know which ones are good for you? “The best way to know that you’re buying healthy food is to eat a complete diet in the first place,” Richards says. She explains that while this may seem daunting, it’s okay to start small. “By eating one or two processed foods from your regular diet per week and finding a complete food replacement, you can change your diet in just a few months,” she says.

“It’s important to remember that this doesn’t have to be an overhaul,” Richards emphasizes. “Keep on enjoying nutritional products on occasions, just don’t make them a regular part of your day.”

If you’re looking for a great whole food alternative to pasta, you’re in luck! “There are quite a few great options,” Richard says. To replace the noodles in traditional noodle dishes, you can use zucchini noodles, squash noodles, or shirataki noodles.
