La India Mexicana Cocina captures the flavors of Odawa and Mexican dishes

Shannon Mega’s food truck started as a way to support her family, but over time has turned into a way to help create a cultural hub for her Native American community.

Mejia, a member of the Little Traverse Bay band of Odawa Indians, started La India Mexicana Cocina last fall to offer customers a blend of Odawa and Mexican flavors. Patrons meet Mejia’s bubbly personality, music, and flavors that hail from both cultures.

“My original idea for this food cart was just a stepping stone for me to open a cultural center/meeting center,” Mejia said.

Orders of fried bread tacos, walking tacos, California-style tacos and other versions fly off their stove. When she’s not working on special occasions, her truck can be found at 716 E. Park Terrace off Saginaw Street in Lansing.
