New Publix is now open | News

The wait is finally over, as the new Publicis officially opened its doors in Athens on the morning of Wednesday, July 13. The ribbon-cutting party took place at 7 a.m., and soon after, shoppers got their first look at the new 48,000-square-foot grocery store on the second floor mezzanine.

Area Manager Sean Franklin explained that having more than one Publix is not unusual in an area, and with current and projected growth, a second location makes sense. “Our real estate department does a great job of figuring out how many rooftops are coming into a particular area and how we can best serve those roofs. The existing store and the building on the other side of 72, are in capacity so this was ideal,” he said.

Construction of the new Publix began in the spring of last year. “There have been some setbacks in the construction work,” said Kristi Aleph, store manager. “We were due to open last week, but since it’s a holiday week, the Fourth of July, we always bring in a lot of support staff from the surrounding stores. The last thing we wanted to do was get everyone out of all the other Publix posts for that big week.” It made sense to postpone and open today.”

The new location features a new 360° deli and features a sushi bar, an olive bar and a ramen noodle bar exclusively in Athens. Alef explained, “Customers can come and shop for it. It has many different stations and bars there. The cooling system around it has a product from the produce section, individual drinks, and tea… It’s kind of a one-stop shop for everyone. You can come and get everything you need to eat Lunch without having to shop the entire store.”

The upper floor mezzanine is a unique common space for customers and staff that offers both indoor and outdoor dining space as well as a sweeping view of the store and its surroundings. “Upstairs is really for our customers to get all their delicious food and go there and enjoy lunch without having to go elsewhere,” said Elif.

With the second location, Publix has created 150 additional jobs in Athens. Many of these jobs were filled by local students. “Lots of minors and lots of minors. I find schools here to be very convenient because everyone can walk to work after school. I think it’s a bonus that they have the right across the street. We always want to get into the minors and the kids. We want to start them off. young and really build a Publix culture in them and hope they stay with us.” Publix hires students from the age of 14.

Publix Super Market is located in MidTowne Center at 165 US Hwy. 31 across from Athens Middle School. It has a full pharmacy with a consultation room, a private pharmacy, and a free blood pressure and vitals device. The store also has six self-checkout kiosks, Rug Doctor rentals, and dry ice for purchase. The store is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., except that it is closed on Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving.
