“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy,
They are the charming gardeners who make
Our souls open.
Marcel Proust

In the early morning hours of July 7, 2022, after an intense battle with cancer, Kathy Doerksen passed out of this world and entered the presence of God.
Kathy was a native of Santa Cruz and was born to Carl and Walter Sauer on August 12, 1958 at the Old Dominican Hospital. Her father died when she was seven years old and she misses him very much. She remembered going to the cake shop on Saturdays, just her and her dad. Kathy supported her mother and herself during high school and beyond.
She met her soon-to-be husband, Dan, at Harbor High School. They married on July 22, 1978 and enjoyed forty-four years together. Cathy and Dan lost their child to meconium ambition on August 29, 1981. Their son Kyle was born on June 16, 1987. This was a very special day in Cathy’s life.
It embodied love and sympathy. Her driving force in life was to be a great wife and mother – and her fervent devotion to this matter was unparalleled. The care and encouragement she gave to her husband and son never stopped and she always put them first. She was really a selfless person.
I love Cathy people. No birthdays were celebrated, no holidays were missed, and there was always a reason to throw a party. She has been exhilarated by bringing happiness to others, and it was always the most elemental in her life when she was hosting a movie night in the backyard or throwing an extravagant event for a loved one’s theme. She had a wonderful gift to make those around her feel special and unique.
She loved simple beauty and was often found in her gardens planting flowers and refilling bird feeders. Cathy was a keen observer, and not a single moment of beauty went unnoticed—a rose in its bud, or a bluebird building a nest, moments to be celebrated. This ability to observe filled with understanding and wisdom. Friends would often come to her for advice, and she was always there to listen and give a thoughtful word when needed.
Kathy was a wonderful woman who had gone through many hardships in her life, but her faith in God was never wavered. She was someone who knew the darkness in life but chose to shine a light through it, providing joy, love and hope to all she met. It was a real gift.
She left behind a long list of family and friends too many to mention. Kathy’s death was preceded by her first son Bradley, both of her parents and brother Karl.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2022 at 11:00 am at Vintage Faith Church. The church is located at 350 Mission Street in Santa Cruz. reception to follow.
