Portland-based Voodoo Donut opens in downtown San Antonio

It’s official, downtown San Antonio is getting a little sweeter with the imminent arrival of the city’s first Voodoo Donuts location. After Chef Stephen Powers announced the upcoming closure of Playland Pizza last month, rumors swirled about who would take over the downtown lease.

MySA has confirmed through the Portland donut provider that Voodoo Donuts is already preparing to move into the property at 400 E Houston Street, with doors opening sometime in late 2022.

“We are excited to bring the magic of voodoo to San Antonio, in the downtown corridor, where a lot of exciting growth is happening,” wrote Chris Schultz, CEO of Voodoo Donut.

This news comes after Voodoo expanded into Cypress, outside of Houston. Voodoo already operates stores in its hometown of Portland and Denver, and the Voodoo Group has completed Hip City by opening its first Texas location in Austin in 2015. Currently, they operate 13 locations across six states.

The company is known for its luscious, luscious pink boxes filled with decadent, one-of-a-kind offerings, such as the donut-shaped “Voodoo Doll” stuffed with raspberry jelly filling and The Old Dirty Bastard, with chocolate frosting, filled with chocolate cream biscuits, and a peanut butter drizzle. The extensive menu also includes flavors like the adorable Bacon-Maple Bar, Oh Captain My Captain (featuring their namesake breakfast cereal) and The Homer (a classic pink ice and sprinkles of nuts in honor of Mr. Simpson).

Since its birth in Portland in 2000, Voodoo has gained international fame with shows such as “Portland” and declared by the “Los Angeles Times” as an international tourist destination. In 2017, a man choked to death while trying to eat a half pound donut within 80 seconds at the chain’s Colfax location in Denver. The long-running contest has been suspended.

Lines have been known to extend outward in Voodoo, so you may want to prepare to queue.
