SouthCoast needs more ginger ice cream spots

SouthCoast is blessed with several locations where you can get some of the best ice cream that will ever cross your lips. Believe me, I know, I’ve tried a lot of them. I’m an ice cream lover, and we know many of you are. That’s one of the reasons we release the annual SouthCoast Ice Cream Card every summer.

However, today’s ice cream lovers are spoiled by the hundreds of flavors of ice cream available at many of these locations. In fact, I’m pretty sure that if you can imagine a flavor in your mind, Acushnet Creamery can find a way to make it happen, and they’re not the only ones. Innovative flavors pop up every season across the region.

However, one flavor we don’t see enough of is one of my all-time favorites: ginger ice cream.

If you haven’t had it before, ginger ice cream has the sweet flavor you’d expect from vanilla ice cream with sharp bits of real ginger. If you like ginger, you will love ginger ice cream.

However, an ice cream flavor that was hard to find in my youth has become much rarer in the 21st century.

When I was a kid, I remember that most of the ice cream kiosks I visited had only the standard flavors. You had chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, and if you’re lucky, they might have had coffee ice cream or if it was a soft serving, they might have had a touch of chocolate and vanilla. If you want a variety of flavours, you’ve gone to Friendly’s.

There was one ice cream stand that we will visit, however, it had ginger ice cream, which my mum always ordered. Welcome Farms in Weymouth was the one that stood out for us kids because of the cow on the roof but the place my mum chooses to go to because of the gingerbread ice cream. I soon developed a taste for it too, and I also realized that it was rare to find it on the menu even then.

These days, we’re lucky to have ginger ice cream on a few of our SouthCoast ice cream menus. Through my personal experience, I’ve found them at Gray’s in Tiverton, Handy Hill in Westport, Erickson’s in Carver, and Oxford Creamery in Mattapoisett.

Where else do you know they carry ginger ice cream? Are you a fan of it too?
