The summer heat may be miserable but one of the benefits of the upcoming season is the abundance of produce. Especially if it ends up on restaurant menus.
Here are some of the new items that have come out recently. If you know of any other seasonal delights at local restaurants, send the information to [email protected]
First a hot weather favorite (at least for me): the fried green tomato sandwich. Locale Farm to Table (1727 18th Street) wisely paired tomatoes with bacon for a BLTA fried green tomato. Enjoyed one on Monday, had one without avocado but the sandwich was no less. Nice aioli with crunchy vegetables with fried fruit and bacon.
If the name doesn’t tell you, Locale operates with seasonal availability for its specials. The restaurant advertises that it uses Tesch Family Farms tomatoes, so the producer may determine how long a dish remains special. My recommendation is not to delay and enjoy the sandwich as long as you can.
Fellow Bakersfield Business Angry Barnyard Barbecue (916 18th Street) also enjoys the season with bourbon drunk peach bread pudding. This summertime dessert, which joins buttermilk pancake and banana pudding cake, highlights the fruit with bourbon-infused caramel.
Order dessert along with crispy pork belly sliders on sweet Hawaiian rolls that the barbecue place is just starting to serve. And don’t forget the tomato pie, which in my opinion is the best side dish with good tomato butter and cheese.
The Habit Burger Grill also feels peachy with its flame-grilled peach salad, which combines grilled fruit and grilled chicken over garden vegetables. Salad topped with a layer of balsamic, pickled red onions, tomatoes, parmesan cheese and citrus dijon dressing.
Krispy Kreme also gets berry inspiration from this warmer weather with its “patch pick” cupcakes. From now until June 26th, it’s introducing three new flavors.
The Strawberry Shortcake Donut is a sour cream donut dipped in a strawberry filling and topped with shortbread crumbs, and a vanilla buttercream swirl with a strawberry drizzle.
Blueberry cheesecake has a blueberry cheesecake filling and is dipped in blueberry icing and finished with shortbread crumbs.
The filling for the mixed berry cobbler is used inside and over the third option, which is also topped with shortbread crumbs and finished with brown sugar icing and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
Jump on these Pringles
The popular chip in the box has new flavors just in time for summer.
Playing on what the nation’s latest craving – spicy and sweet combinations – has heated up the flavor of Pringles Ranch with the new limited-time Pringles Wavy Chipotle Ranch. Smoked chipotle chips are paired with delicious creamy ranch in a crunchy, crunchy bite.
“We always listen to what our fans crave and pride ourselves on delivering insanely accurate flavor combinations in one go,” said Mauricio Jenkins, Pringles Head of Marketing in the US, in a press release. “These new chips have the perfect balance of hot and sweet with flavor first and heat second, all while providing fans of Pringles ranch and snacks alike with a new way to try this classic bite.”
Pringles has also teamed up to introduce new, time-limited flavors with “Hot Ones,” an online show where celebrities try to push as many hot sauce-dipped wings as possible, each wing more condiment than the last.
Options for this month are Pringles Scorchin’ Hot Ones Los Calientes Rojo (at Walmart stores) and Pringles Scorchin’ Hot Ones Los Calientes Verde (many retailers). In July, Pringles Scorchin’s classic hot sauce will be available exclusively in Circle K stores.
