The weekend for NHL Hartford Whalers alumni returns to Conn. ballfield

It’s an opportunity for players and fans to honor the NHL team that left Hartford 25 years ago.

HARTFORD, Connecticut – The stadium at Dunkin’ Donuts Park is all about pucks, at least this weekend. For the fifth time, the Hartford Whalers alumni of the weekend have returned to the capital – a chance for players and fans to honor the NHL team that left Hartford 25 years ago.

It’s great to be back,” said Chuck Keaton, a Hall of Fame Whalers announcer for nearly two decades. “The weekend for me is mainly about the fans and the second generation of fans who don’t even know any of us. They go out with their moms and dads who were teenagers when the team left.”

Andre Lacroix, a former whaling center, now 77, said he would love to visit Hartford and is grateful to the Yard Goats for welcoming him back.

“All the guys who’ve played with Whalers, look forward to this every year,” Lacroix said, walking along the grounds of Dunkin’ Donuts Park.

Wheeler’s friend and teammate Jordy Douglas played the left winger from 1978 to 1982.

“It’s almost like taking back our childhood. Here, (in Hartford) it was a community friendship, it was a community relationship and we go back to see our friends who are like our family here,” Douglas said.

“We think it’s really important to honor (The Whalers) and we’re honored that they love coming back and getting to know the Yard Goat players and fans every year,” said Jeff Dooley, radio host for The Yard Goats.

“It feels like we’re still playing together, we’re all such a big family and I think the fans at Hartford made us that way,” Lacroix added.
