Over a decade ago, I found my first vegan food blog and got hooked on it. Up until that point, the only vegetables in my diet had been the boring side salads and tomatoes in my salsa (I’m a 19-year-old who’d be shocked because I’m a registered dietitian now).
While eating more plant-based meals was great for my digestive system, it was hard to get enough protein in my busy schedule. I had to find a vegan protein powder that tasted good and helped me get a boost of nutrients. A trip to Whole Foods Market later, and I had a pile of protein powder packets to try.
My checklist included taste (the most fail at this point), texture (we missed a few here too) and whole food ingredients. So I started my love with Vega Essentials protein powder.
Contains whole food ingredients and great macros
Getting more protein was a must during my college years and now also as a busy working mom of two. Half a day could pass before I realized that all I ate was the grilled cheese crust for the kids.
Putting this protein powder into a quick smoothie keeps me full and energetic, filling in the nutrient gaps when I can’t sit down to a quality meal. I like to use Vega Essentials protein powder over other brands because of the extra vitamins and minerals it adds.
Here’s the nutritional breakdown for one scoop of Vega Essentials Chocolate Protein Powder:

- total fat: 4 grams
- total carbohydrates: 6 grams
- the basic: 4 grams
- sugar: 1 gram
- protein: 20 grams
It also contains other essential nutrients:
- Vitamin A: 30% of the daily value

- Vitamin E: 25% daily value

- Vitamin B2: 35% Daily Value
The main protein source in this powder is pea protein, followed by flaxseeds. The ingredient list includes whole foods, including broccoli powder, kale, carrots, quinoa, berries, spirulina, and more.
While this protein powder doesn’t replace a meal full of these nutrient-dense foods, it does help fill in the gaps when you’re tired of time.
You’ll love the taste and texture
While nutrition is important, it’s not helpful if you can’t actually get yourself to drink the shake. Vega Essentials chocolate has a great texture, especially when mixed into a smoothie.
Plant-based protein powders have one major drawback compared to whey: They’re often chalky – especially those made with pea protein. Whey protein powder blends into a creamy texture much more easily than pea protein due to the vegetable fibers. But Vega Essentials protein powder has minimal chalkiness compared to many of the other pea protein powders I’ve tried.
Now, to the taste. It’s chocolate and sweet – a kind of nutritious milkshake. With all of its whole food ingredients, it has a somewhat earthy taste, but not quite as much as Vega protein powder and greens powder.
It should also be noted that Vega Essentials sweetened with stevia is devoid of calories. While I enjoy it, some may experience an unpleasant aftertaste from it.
If you’re familiar with a sweetener, try mixing the shake with other foods to help finish off the taste of stevia. Adding a little honey or fruit to your shake can help mask the stevia so you can enjoy the taste of chocolate and the health benefits of protein powder.
How do I use Vega Essentials protein powder
While you can mix water and protein powder in a mixing glass, it’s not the preferred way to enjoy this plant-based protein.
For my daily shake, I like to mix a spoonful of Vega Chocolate Protein Powder with almond or flax milk, frozen bananas, spinach, and a handful of berries on hand.
If you’re in the mood for a healthy dessert, I’ll mix a scoop with bananas, extra cocoa powder, peanut butter, and a few sprinkles of milk for a delicious “nice cream” banana.
