‘Tips for Jesus’: Generous dinner wows Scranton waitress with a $3,000 tip

With inflation hitting many Americans hard in their pocket, sometimes it’s the kindness of strangers that can make all the difference.

Such was the case for a waitress who was working at the Alfredo Pizza Café in Scranton, Pennsylvania last month, who received a tip for life.

Relying on tips to make a living is not easy. So, after giving a customer a bill totaling $13 for the Stromboli he ordered, Mariana Lambert was shocked to see that her customer had left her a $3,000 tip, according to WNEP-TV.

“It meant a lot to me because everyone goes through things,” Lambert said. “It really touched my heart. I still can’t believe it. I’m still in shock.”

Her fellow employees were initially skeptical of the gesture.

“We turned his card on, and everything was gone. We took his ID and took pictures of everything. They waited a bit to make sure it was legit and went through it, and it ended up being real,” Lambert told WNEP.

This was not the first time that an out-of-town client named Eric Smith had generously offered a servant. During his travels, Smith uses tipping as a favor of sorts, blessing others in an effort he calls “Tips for Jesus,” which has been a trend on social media for the past few years.

“It’s good for people to notice people in the restaurant industry because it’s very hard work and a lot of people don’t fully understand the understaffing aspect,” said Zachary Jacobson, restaurant manager. “It’s definitely good to know that people participate and help others in this way.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has wiped out many small businesses, including restaurants. As CBN News reported in December of 2020, more than 110,000 restaurants across the country closed their doors, either permanently or long-term at the start of the pandemic, leaving many food service workers without jobs.

Lambert explained that she’s been waiting for tables since high school and knows how hard it can be to get by. She told WNEP that she hopes to push the kindness forward and give a little extra cash when she pays her bill the next time she goes out to eat.

As CBN’s Faithwire reported last month, the kind work may still be going on. An unnamed “angel” left a tip of $777 after spending just $63 on food at a Chinese restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana. More importantly, the waitress who had received the big tip turned to God earlier that day in prayer, asking for her help to help her make ends meet.

Waitress Ava Joan said that her customer’s kind gesture shocked her.

She told WVUE-TV, “Tell him he enjoys your food. That’s it. So he gave me the big advice. I don’t know why, he’s so crazy. It was a surprise to me.” “I can’t believe. I think God gave me the gift.”

Immediately realizing the importance and power of this prayer response, Guann said she donated money to her church, describing the kind person who left the tip as an “angel.”

Alice Ho, who runs the restaurant, said the ordeal stunned her, especially after she learned of Joan’s prayer before receiving the gift.

“It gave me goosebumps,” he told WVUE-TV. “She told me she prayed that day, and it came true. That means someone listened. Someone listened.”
